Prologue

Dix was forced to her knees as Sara’s eyes widened in shock. “This can’t be happening.” her thoughts repeated over and over. Dix looked up and smiled a grin that meant trouble. She spun, causing the bullet that had been aimed at her head to hit her in the side. “Dix!” she shouted. Dix was shot again as she was pulled up the hill. Then, everything went black.

Sara shot up in bed, crying out as sweat dripped down her face. It was one year after she watched Dix get shot. The nightmares were less frequent, but still there. The door opened and her brother walked in. “Another nightmare?” he asked, sitting next to her on the bed. Sara nodded and wiped her face on her sleeve. Tears streamed down her cheeks as she buried her face into her brothers shoulder. “It was just a nightmare. Nothing’s going to hurt you.” Sara nodded and smiled as he leaned forward and pressed a kiss to her hair. “Go to sleep, Sara. You have school tomorrow. Nothing is going to hurt you.” Ever since the kidnapping, Tyler had been more brotherly toward her. Sara nodded and lay back down, curling up under the covers. Her eyes closed as she thought, “I wish she weren’t dead.”

Meanwhile, about two miles away from her, her prayers had unknowingly been answered. A girl sat, fiddling with the straps of the goggles in her lap. Lightning illuminated the swirling pupils and the scaring around her eyes. Dix turned and looked over her shoulder at the picture she kept on her dresser. It was the whole Jackson Gang in the park. Jason had an arm around Dix’s shoulder and Fallon had his arms wrapped around Sara’s waist. Tears fell down her cheeks as she remembered all the good times that they had. Chip had gone off to college, leaving her all alone. She was living alone in a small apartment down the street from her old house. Picking up the picture, she smiled and laughed. Dix missed everyone terribly, but that, was about to change.
